VISUAL ART

Visual Art programs are taught to all students from Year 1 to 6. The lessons cover many areas and media, showing examples of artworks created by a wide range of local and international, past and present artists; students will be taught to have an understanding and appreciation of the Art Movements and it changes over time;  how to use particular art media (drawing, painting, collage, photography, printing, ceramic, sculpture, jewellery, digital art using iPad/computer, mixed media, etc.), how to apply specific skills and develop their understanding of a range of materials, mediums and styles (e.g. lead pencil, markers, paint pens, wax crayons, charcoal, acrylic paint, watercolour paint, ink, oil & chalk pastels, foam printing, gel printing, silk-screen printing, lino printing, clay, paper mache sculpture, iPad, computer).

 

Students develop an understanding of how to use the elements of art and the principles of design in their artwork. Students are encouraged to create art using their own imaginations as well as those modelled on the step-by-step process learnt during the art lessons.

 

Students’ artworks are celebrated and exhibited on special days, such as Harmony Day, NAIDOC and the annual National Simultaneous Storytelling Day. To promote and encourage students’ achievements, Students also participating in original art projects for the Shaun Tan Young Artists Award and Willandra Primary School Young Artists Award.

 

To showcase artworks created throughout the year by our students, Willandra Primary School Art Exhibition are held annually, and we also participate in the annual Kelmscott Show Art Exhibition displaying students’ artwork to other students, staff, parents, families, people in the community, members of the Local Council and Parliament.

Art Extension Class programs for selected gifted and passionate students in Year 4, 5 and 6 are created to extend and explore their artistic ideas, skills and processes. These students also attend an end of year excursion to the WA Art Gallery and Workshop to consolidate their learning.
